What is the BC Chihuahua Rescue (BCCR)?
The BCCR is a Chihuahua rescue group for B.C. (Canada) and the U.S. (Washington and Oregon State).
Our goal is to provide safe, loving, permanent homes for Chihuahuas that are no longer wanted or cannot be cared for. In addition, we advocate an end to the operation of puppy mills, pet store animal sales and the neglect and abuse of these precious dogs.
I can’t believe these tiny creatures need rescuing?
Yes, we do understand that it is hard to believe that Chihuahuas need rescue, but over the years we have seen dogs in horrible situations. We’ve seen Chihuahuas kept in filthy, appalling conditions, where their health and well-being is severely compromised. We work hard to have these animals successfully taken care of and eventually placed in what we call their new, “forever” homes.
Please do note that placement situations are not all because of abuse. Sometimes families must give up their beloved Chihuahua because they are moving or Grandma is moving into assisted living. We’re here to help in any situation.
How does the BCCR hear about Chihuahuas in need?
The BCCR works closely with animal shelters and other rescue organizations who usually contact us directly. We also monitor newspapers and websites for any information on Chihuahuas that are being given up. In some cases the dog is older and has special needs. Someone may be moving out of town, or just wants to get rid of the animal.
If you hear of a Chi in need, please contact us immediately.
What’s the next step? What if I want to adopt?
Our first priority is to have the dog formally surrendered to BCCR, then have it assessed by a veterinarian. At the same time, we will arrange immediate foster care for the dog in an approved foster setting. Once the dog’s health is assessed, he/she will receive on-going treatment if necessary.
We then work to place the Chihuahua in an approved adoptive home. We want a good match for the dog, and assess our adoption applications accordingly. We screen for safety in the home, compatibility and lifestyle of the prospective owner.
If the applicant has other pets, we will contact the applicant’s veterinarian to ensure that the other pets have been receiving quality health care and that the applicant is responsible. Please see our adoption process page for more information.
Do you work and share information with other rescue organizations?
Yes, we encourage the sharing of information with other dog rescue groups and will work in partnership with them to place any Chihuahua or small dog in need.
Why is there a need for another dog rescue?
We believe there is an under representation of adequate rescue resources here in British Columbia and in the Pacific Northwest. We want to boost and enhance our efforts by providing fast, efficient coordination of Chihuahua rescue endeavors in these regions.
How can others help your organization?
We certainly accept donations. For our initial start up, funds came directly from our members. Incurred costs include transportation and veterinarian care for our rescues. In addition, our adoption fees help to offset these costs.
